Hämäläinen v Finland - Grand Chamber judgment imminent

The European Court of Human Rights has announced that its Grand Chamber judgment in Hämäläinen v Finland will be delivered next Wednesday, 16 July, at 4.30pm.

The complaint concerns whether the requirement that a transexual person transform an opposite-sex marriage into a same-sex civil partnership in order to obtain full recognition of their gender violates Articles 8, 12 and 14 of the Convention.

This is a very significant judgment. If the Court upholds the applicant's complaint it will, for the first time, recognise a right relating to marriage in respect of a couple comprising two persons of the same sex.
